ABOUT ME
Hello there! Welcome to my homepage! I’m Chan Lok Kan, you can call me Tom Tom. Being born and raised in Hong Kong, I always have a strong emotional attachment to the city, and my father’s local bakery business definitely adds up to that as well. I grew up watching my father make the Hong-Kong-exclusive pineapple buns and silky smooth egg tarts, I’m perfectly aware of the charm of Hong Kong’s unique culture, enchanting neighbourhood and its home-grown talent. Now that I’ve stepped into the 27th year of my life, I’ve never felt as passionate as ever to promote Hong Kong traditional culture to the younger generation and our foreign friends.
At the City University of Hong Kong, I took Journalism as a major and Environmental Science and Management as a minor. My studies during those 4 years have equipped me with confidence and outstanding interpersonal skills. What's more, I’ve gained knowledge of the precious ecosystem and environment in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, I actively partook in various extra-curricular activities in campus. I was the Chairman of the Travelling Society of CityU, in which I was responsible not only for holding events, but also for organising local tours for overseas exchange students. At that time, contents of the tours were not as it is now, they focused on visiting Hong Kong’s special attractions. Besides, social and voluntary work was another major part in my life. I was keen on joining conferences and activities on social issues which deserved attention. Being a Hongkonger, concerning about social current affairs matters a lot. I was also a member of the Ichthyological Society of Hong Kong in which I helped bring the ecological conservation to the public attention. From all the valuable experience, I’m able to equip myself with requisite knowledge for launching my current career life.
Now, as known to some of you, I’ve been an on-the-scene reporter for 5 years. In the process, I’ve come across many global hot topics, ranging from social, cultural, historical to environmental aspects. After being a reporter for several months, I realized as a journalist, I was obliged to draw people’s attention to these important issues; meanwhile, as a Hongkonger, I felt more duty-bound to contribute to my hometown. I then started my freelance career as a tour guide for local ecological and historical and cultural tours. Having been a local tour guide for 5 years, my clients and I have explored historical and geological gems in Hong Kong.
